Is Hiking Good for the Mind & Soul? Here Are 5 Reasons Why

Hiking is becoming a popular hobby in the Philippines (and other countries) these days. Looking at your social media feed, you might notice that some of your friends are already engaged in this physical activity too.

Aside from keeping your body physically fit, are there other benefits of hiking? Hiker or non-hiker, I think you already know some of its positive effects on ourselves. So let’s deep dive into the top 5 reasons why hiking is good for your soul and mental health.

5 Reasons Why Hiking is Good For The Mind & Soul

Now, let’s deep dive on the reasons why this hobby is beneficial to your inner body.

1. Instant peace of mind and relaxation

If you want to pause from your busy life, breathe some fresh air, and witness an amazing outdoor view, then it is the perfect time to hike. Hiking gives us a quick escape from reality and it draws your mind and soul away from the toxic city that you live in.

Leaves are green and this color is considered as comforting and relaxing. The mountain trail is full of luscious trees that will make you feel relaxed and refreshed. (1)

2. Hiking changes your perspective about life

Hiking is fun and easy at first, but when it starts to ascend and you begin to heavily pant while your heart pumps to its fullest, now the situation’s getting serious. Backing out would be the last option to do (because boy, you’re not weak aren’t you?), and you can only move forward. Understand and accept this fully in your heart and you will see failure as an opportunity to recharge, improve, and be better in life. (2)

(Note: If you think that you’re not physically strong enough to carry on with the hike, tell your group and guide of what you’re feeling. Do not keep it to yourself so you can be given proper medical attention.)

3. Teaches you to become humble

This is one of the most important lessons that we must learn in life. In a group of 10 hikers and 2 tour guides, what do you think will matter? Their annual salary? Place of residence? Number of passport stamps? Well, you’re correct. None of it will matter. As in ZERO. In hiking, everyone is equal. No one is entitled to receive special treatment.

When it rains, everybody gets wet. Don’t expect the guide to hold an umbrella for you. Enjoy the rain instead and become one with nature! For sure, your mind and soul will thank you at the end of the day.

4. You’ll appreciate nature more

Hiking will open your mind to travel more. The views will leave your mind and soul breathless and for sure, you’ll want to witness more. (3) It will also show you the importance of taking care of the environment and its effects if we don’t. The more you hike and travel, the more you will get to appreciate how beautiful the world is.

Don’t forget to bring a camera so you can capture these precious views and encourage other people to start hiking too.

5. Hiking opens your world to new adventures

As you hike more mountains, you’ll start to understand that your mind and soul’s happiness is outside your comfort zone. You’ll find ways on how to make your life exciting and will be more open to trying out new activities.
Hiking mountains with lesser difficulties will also physically and mentally prepare you for those major climbs you’ll be very excited to conquer. Your first Pulag hike via Ambangeg trail (3/9) will be Akiki the next time you come back (7/9).
